Why Growth Has Slowed – and What to Do About It
By: Carissa Carleton, MBA, CET
Hitting $2 million in revenue is no small feat.
It means your product or service works. People are buying. There’s a team. A reputation. Momentum.
But for many businesses, this is also where the plateau hits.
The model that got you to $2M… won’t take you beyond it.
Here’s why – and what to do about it:
1. Founder Bottleneck
You’re still the go-to for decisions, approvals, and problem-solving.
It’s flattering – and exhausting.
Breakthrough move: Build leadership layers and decision frameworks.
You can’t scale if you are the system.
2. No Mid-Level Leadership
You’ve got a team of doers – but no real owners.
That means everything flows up… to you.
Breakthrough move: Develop internal leaders who can manage others, own outcomes, and drive progress without you in the room.
3. Custom Everything
Each client or job is a “one-off.”
It feels high-touch… but it’s low-margin and high-effort.
Breakthrough move: Productize your services. Create tiers, packages, or defined scopes to protect your team and your margins.
4. No Standard Operating Rhythm
Priorities shift daily. Meetings are reactive.
The team is busy, but not aligned.
Breakthrough move: Implement a weekly rhythm: team meetings, scorecards, and clear weekly priorities.
Consistency scales – chaos doesn’t.
5. Firefighting Culture
Everyone’s working hard – but mostly putting out fires.
Breakthrough move: Start logging issues, root causes, and patterns.
Fix the systems behind the fire – not just the flames.
6. Weak Financial Controls
You’re making money – but you don’t always know where it’s going.
Cashflow is tight. Profit is unpredictable.
Breakthrough move: Get a solid handle on job costing, overhead, forecasted cashflow, and leading indicators. Don’t just look at the bank account.
7. No Performance Visibility
You think people are being productive… but you’re not sure. And you hate micromanaging.
Breakthrough move: Build simple KPIs and scoreboards.
Visibility doesn’t mean surveillance – it means clarity and coaching.
8. Sales Depend on You
You’re still the closer. And when you’re away? So are the deals.
Breakthrough move: Build a sales process, CRM pipeline, and train someone to sell without you.
Even if it’s messy at first.
9. No Accountability Structure
You say what’s expected… but people miss the mark with no consequence.
Breakthrough move: Clarify roles, outcomes, and expectations – and follow through.
Accountability isn’t about blame – it’s about consistency and clarity.
10. No Outside Perspective
You’re in it. Every day. You can’t fix what you can’t see – and you’re too close to see everything.
Breakthrough move: Bring in an advisor, coach, consultant, or peer group.
Someone who will challenge you, spot what you’re missing, and help you focus on the right levers.
Scaling Beyond $2M Requires a Shift
More hours won’t fix it. More hustle won’t fix it.
You need systems. Structure. Support.
Growth beyond this point means building a business that runs without relying on the founder for everything.
If you recognize yourself in this list, you’re not alone.
It doesn’t mean you’ve failed – it means you’ve graduated to a new level of business.
The question is:
Will your systems evolve with you?
Want help identifying which levers will unlock your next stage of growth?
Let’s talk — no pressure, just perspective.
